Pear
Pears are sweet, juicy fruits with a distinctive shape, delicate aroma, and smooth or slightly grainy flesh, depending on the variety. They come in many types, including Bartlett, Bosc, Anjou, Comice, and Asian pears, each with its own texture and flavor. Pears can range from crisp and mildly sweet to soft, buttery, floral, and intensely juicy. Their natural sweetness and subtle acidity make them versatile for eating fresh as well as baking, roasting, poaching, grilling, and using in salads, sauces, desserts, and savory dishes.

Choosing
Choose pears that are free from deep bruising, cuts, shriveling, or signs of decay. Many pear varieties are harvested before they are fully ripe and continue to ripen after picking. To check for ripeness, gently press near the neck of the pear, just below the stem. A ripe pear should give slightly in this area while remaining relatively firm elsewhere. Asian pears are an exception because they are typically crisp when ripe and should feel firm rather than soft. Color can vary by variety, so firmness and overall condition are usually better indicators of quality than color alone.
