Bosc pears

Bosc pears are a distinctive pear variety known for their elongated neck, rounded base, and russeted brown skin. Their flesh is firm, dense, and less juicy than many other pear varieties, with a sweet, honey-like flavor and subtle spicy notes. Bosc pears hold their shape particularly well when cooked, making them an excellent choice for baking, roasting, poaching, grilling, and other recipes where a pear that remains intact is preferred. When ripe, they have a tender texture while still maintaining more structure than softer varieties such as Bartlett.

Choosing

Choose Bosc pears that are free from deep bruising, cuts, shriveling, or signs of decay. Their naturally brown, russeted skin is normal and should not be mistaken for spoilage. To check for ripeness, gently press near the neck of the pear, just below the stem. A ripe Bosc pear should give slightly in this area while remaining firm through the rest of the fruit. Because Bosc pears retain their firm texture well, they can be enjoyed when slightly firm for cooking or allowed to ripen further for eating fresh.
