Bartlett Pear

Bartlett pears are one of the most popular pear varieties, known for their classic pear shape, juicy flesh, and sweet, delicate flavor. They are typically green when harvested and turn yellow as they ripen, although red Bartlett pears are also available. Their flesh is smooth, tender, and buttery when ripe, with a fragrant sweetness and mild floral notes. Bartlett pears are especially juicy and become very soft as they ripen, making them excellent for eating fresh, baking, poaching, making sauces, and preserving.

Choosing

Choose Bartlett pears that are free from deep bruising, cuts, shriveling, or signs of decay. Bartlett pears are often sold firm and green and continue to ripen at room temperature. To check for ripeness, gently press near the neck of the pear with your thumb. A ripe pear should give slightly when pressed near the stem while the rest of the fruit remains relatively firm. Fully ripe yellow Bartlett pears are sweeter, softer, and juicier than green, firmer pears.
